RSO's Love It!(25.12.2009)
Whenever your rifle is to be unloaded and the chamber empty at a range were others are shooting, with this dust cover/safety flag in place, it IS a flag to the RSO. The large yellow surface of the "flag" portion is visible from at least 50 ft. where the range officer can see it at a distance. Using this is a high visibility sign that the gun is unloaded as the plastic "rod" goes into the barrel; the ejection port is totally covered and the flag is obvious. It is held in place by the pressure of the bolt. Without question, using one of these at the range shows your good sense and awareness to safety for others as well as yourself and makes others know you are that much more responsible. There is no downside to this item! Even at home, it lets you know the gun is unloaded wherever it is, on the wall, in the gun safe, anywhere! The cost is reasonable and a small price to pay verses what could be a accidental firing with a bad ending. Don't hesitate adding this to your next order. Do it!
Design Flaw, Follow-Up to My 1st Comment(18.01.2010)
The concept of the Safety Flag is irrefutable. It accomplishes what it is designed to do and is accepted at most all firing ranges as a way to display that the weapon is unloaded to the range safety officers. No complaints here.
It does have a flaw that will jam your AR-15. On the website and the picture of the flag in the rifle, you cannot see the area of the flaw. If you have one, you can follow this.
1. Hold the "flag" portion in your right hand. 2. Place your right index finger on the side of the "rod" that goes into the barrel. 3. Lower/slide your index finger downward where it touches the top of the portion that goes into the ejection port of the AR. 4. It will be touching a small tab, a little "blade" of plastic that curves inward toward the plastic rod.
This piece of plastic will ... WILL break off in the bolt carrier assembly, in the opening (hole) located under where the gas tube inserts. This little tiny piece of plastic will "jam", "lock up", 'FREEZE' your bolt assembly tighter than if you had soaked the entire assembly in Loc-Tite for a week and let it dry.
This piece breaks off after you have inserted the flag into the chamber and then let the bolt go forward. The pressure of the bolt against the flag, along with any bumps, bangs, to even just sitting the rifle down on it's butt can cause it to break. This is the second incident of this happening.
After removing the broken piece of plastic from the bolt, the flag still fit in place and did it's job. So, I'd venture a guess that this little piece of plastic is more of a sprue or spur than a working part that if missing ... isn't a big deal.
GOOD INSURANCE FOR YOUR AR/M16(08.05.2010)
I RECEIVED ONE AS A BIRTHDAY GIFT A FEW MONTHS AGO. MY RANGE NOW REQUIRES A SAFETY FLAG AND IF YOUR RANGE DOES TOO,THIS IS THE ONE TO GET.WHEN USED,THE BOLT CANNOT BE ENGAGED AND THE COVER KEEPS THE DIRT OUT SO YOUR UPPER RECEIVER DOESN'T GET LAPPED BY THE CARRIER. HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY FOR YOUR AR? IT ALSO WORKS IN ALL MY OTHER RIFLES AS A SAFETY FLAG.
