Specially bent and slotted tool is really about the only way to get past the frame pin to grab and compress the rebound slide spring while removing or installing the rebound slide. Fits all J, K, L, N and X frames. Will not scratch that valuable frame, pinch or bind.

Simple tool that makes removing the Rebound slide much easier without the spring flying accross the room. Also make installation a snap. A must have tool for anyone that works on S&W Revolvers.
Good tool, won't be without it(12.02.2010)
Have used a homemade tool for years. No more, this tool makes changing the rebound spring a snap. Anyone working on a S&W needs this. Can have the spring out, replaced and the revolver reassembled while I would still be struggling with my homemade tool.
The right tool for the job(13.02.2010)
Gets the rebound slide in and out without fighting the spring. I had to open up the slot a tad to straddle the pin in a J frame, but it fits K and N frames right out of the box.
Didn't work for me(01.03.2010)
the tool slips off the spring, it needs to fit into the spring with a shoulder to push the spring
Problematic(21.09.2010)
I struggled with it, but I could not get the thing to work. The slot slipped very nicely over the retaining pin. But I couldn't get it to capture the spring. In the end, a roll pin worked quickly.
Great Tool!(23.01.2011)
How did I ever get my S&W revolvers back together without this? As another reviewer pointed out, the spring can slip off, but I found light finger pressure holds everything in place. With the tool, reinstalling the slide and spring is a breeze!
works perfect, hard to reproduce(07.02.2011)
revove sideplate slip around spring pin, push and lift. put new spring in holder .reverse and replace side plate.otherwise wear goggles and TIE a yellow string on the spring.
Right tool for the job(13.06.2011)
If you tear down more than 2 S&W revolvers in your life, get this tool. Makes the job very easy.
S&W Rebound Slide Tool(08.07.2011)
This tool did not fit my S&W J frame.
Useful tool, but not magic(17.03.2012)
This is a nicely configured tool for lifting the rebound spring out, and for its final positioning in the frame. However, I find that for initially compressing the spring to catch its edge on the frame post, a #2 Phillips screwdriver works better because the spring end is constrained on the tip. After snagging a spring edge on the frame post, I switch to the tool for final positioning. Also, I had to open up the slot in the tool slightly with a file before it would straddle the frame pins in the 442 & 642 on which I've used it so far. This isn't a magical do-everything tool, but I'm glad I bought it and would recommend it you you change many rebound springs.
Broke first time out(27.08.2012)
Tip was pinched together when received, broke while opening tip, on close observation, looked like some type of pot metal, this particular tool appeared very britle, dont waste your money, tossed in the trash can
Newbie to J frame disassembly.(01.03.2013)
I bought this to do a spring change on a S&W 640 Pro (for the first time). The spring tool made it easy as pie, and I've heard that it can be problematic when using the wrong tool (e.g. blade screwdriver). Removal and installation of the spring were both easy with this tool. The notch was just the right size to get over the spring retaining pin. Highly recommended.
Great Tool!(08.06.2013)
The S&W rebound slide spring tool is OUTSTANDING!! Makes removing the spring a simple task and reinserting the spring is easy as well. Awesome tool highly recommend it!
s&w rebound tool(16.06.2013)
perfect ---as advertised--works as advertised
Did not work with J frame(09.07.2013)
This Product did not fit over the Jframe spring retaining pin. Save your money, I used a flat screwdriver and it was just as easy.
Doesn't really work ...(04.12.2013)
I just did a J-frame trigger spring upgrade and tried to use this tool. It didn't really work any better than a small flat screwdriver. The slot doesn't fit the newer J-frame rebound spring retention pin. I pried it apart a bit more to try and get it to work, but in the end a small flat screwdriver worked better. I wouldn't bother with this tool again. The Gunsmither tool might work better but I'm sold on small flat screwdrivers.... I wish I could find the tool Apex used in their video... this is not it.
Doesn't fit!(28.03.2015)
Looks like a nice tool, but notch is too narrow to actually fit around the post in an aluminum framed 642. Tool ordered from their competitor fit.
Faulty Tool - Twice(25.06.2015)
The fork on my first one was not wide enough to straddle the retaining pin. Tech Support said yeah, we got a bad batch, we'll replace it.
Well, the second one is the same as the first will not fit the pins on either a 442 or 637 - so I gave up.
Good concept, poor QA on manufacturing. Seems like there must have been a specification and this does not meet it.
S&W Rebound Slide Tool works(29.01.2017)
Inexpensive and it works at least on a K frame S&W! Never stripped a S&W of all it's internal parts before but this tool took care of the hard part, rebound slide removal and installation, without so much as a whimper. After reading all of the reviews, especially the bad ones, I was a bit concerned about ordering this tool since I'm NOT a gunsmith. This tool works and I'm so happy I bought it because it will be useful for any future work on my other Smith and Wesson revolvers.
Must have(15.05.2017)
You can try the screwdriver way but when the spring launches its self across the room and many bad words are used trying to find it, you will appreciate this tool so much more. If you are going to work on firearms that may save or take someone's life, you better have the right tools and training to do the work.
Great tool to contain spring(20.05.2017)
Tool slot undersized as received so spent 3 minutes to insert screwdriver blade into slot to bend both prongs approx 0.020 in outward (to widen slot), filed sharp corners/edges and now have a perfect tool to control springs during disassembly/reassembly.
Non-Functional Twenty Dollar Bill(08.07.2017)
Tool will not capture spring as advertised
Very Good Tool(28.09.2017)
My example of this tool was very well made and fit over the rebound stud perfectly.
