I collect M1 Garands. Have used the bullet test to get a ball park idea of ME. ME gauge alone cost more than this combo ME/TE gauge. Wish I would have had this gauge the last M1 I bought. Could have saved me $350.00 for a new barrel on an otherwise collectors M1. Easy to use. Highly recommend.
Very useful.(18.05.2015)
Instructions easy to follow, easy to use. Same for the M1 Carbine gauge by Merchant.
Does the job(15.12.2010)
This was the only throat gauge for the M1 Carbine that I could find and it does the job as described. I have owned over 100 M1 Carbines and this tool comes in handy when evaluating the condition of the barrel (throat).
Must Have Tool(22.08.2012)
If you are an active shooter or just want to keep track of your barrel wear this is a must have tool. I have a number of barrels for my AR15s and do not keep track of the number of rounds fired thru each barrel. This guage gave me an instant reading of the amount of wear in all my barrels. One of which was used and I was keeping as a spare was totaly shot out compared to barrels which have had thousdands of rounds thru them. This guage is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a bore scope and much easier to use. Wish I had bought one years ago.
.223 Throat erosion ga(12.12.2013)
This is a high quality product and performs as advertised, but not as easy to use or useful I first thought. It requires a lot of additional firearm knowledge to be a productive tool.
Primarily these comments are on erosion gauges in general, not this individual product. First you have to keep detailed records for a long time and you have to be firing a lot of rounds. You have to develop a technique of reading the gauge that is exactly the same each time. The depth reading you record can vary with the position of your head. Additionally the gauge doesn't really give you a failure point but rather a relative change over time. So you have to record your first reading then compare subsequent readings to get the relative change in wear. Since there really isn't any "failure" point, you just see slowly deteriorating accuracy. So unless you compare accuracy against throat erosion, then you don't really know what an individual reading means.
Also it's an odd shape, I thought it would fold or disassemble to fit in a smaller slot in my tool box.
That said, anybody who's serious about quality firearms, precision shooting and shoots a lot (it's going to take 1000's of rounds to see a difference), then it would seem to be a pretty essential tool.
