I was really hesitant to purchase one of these at first because I did not want to spend the money on this, the extractor tensioning tool, and the trigger pull gauge, but after months of failure to extracts from about 30% of my rounds I finally got fed up and forked the cash over. Now I am wishing I had not waited so long!
If you are experiencing symptoms of brass stovepiping in the ejection port, hitting your face or head, or even just never leaving the chamber at all, there is a very high probability that your extractor does not have enough tension and this gauge set will help you correct it.
First, let me say not to waste your time and efforts in following the DIY solutions given on YouTube. You will spend too long guessing and you will end up wasting your time and getting frustrated when you have to retune to your extractor every few weeks.
The gauges are extremely easy to use. At first I thought I was using it wrong because it kept slipping out. Nope! It was because my extractor was severely under tensioned from my guessing based on tool-less solutions I found on the internet and Youtube. For proper extraction, you will need 25-28oz of tension. Prior to getting these, I would estimate my tension was around 4oz even after my ghetto DIY adjustments. Boy was I shocked at how off I was even though I passed the jiggle tests suggested by the DIY tips.
You *will* need a trigger pull gauge along with this, but you do not necessarily need the tensioning tool to adjust your extractor (but it helps your fine tuning and saves a lot of time). But once you figuring out how to use everything, it will only take a few minutes to correct your tension, instead of the many hours to weeks of trial and error you would have wasted on guessing.
Do not own a 1911 without this!

I bought one of these when building a 1911 and have used it recently to set extractor tension on another build. You just attach a trigger pull gauge to the hole and insert the side with the caliber you are using and pull it until it comes free. The reading is the tension. Very simple, straightforward, and effective. After building my Caspian, the gun has run an easy 10,000 rounds last season without any failures to extract or feed and the gun is my primary pistol for USPSA. Used in conjunction with the 10-8 extractor function test, you'll have an idea how good your extractor is doing.
I will add one caveat. The piece is brass and after extended usage, it will decrease in size, and you won't get correct readings. Currently mine is 0.470" in diameter at its widest point, which is about .01" too small and it won't give correct readings anymore. I'll be buying another, as it really does work, but be sure to check the dimensions from time to time to be sure you're getting the right readings.

When using the Weigand Extractor tool you have a measurable value to set the extractor's tension on the cartridge. With out these and a trigger pull gauge/scale it is guestimation.not exactly exact and only experience will help.
